One of peninsular
Charleston’s most charming and undiscovered suburbs is the
Radcliffeborough area. Bounded by a hip and burgeoning King Street
business section on one side and historic, charming Ashley Hall
School on the other, Radcliffeboro represents Charleston’s
graceful, tasteful merge of old and new. Great, columned mansions
of the antebellum era share blocks and magnolia trees with recent
homes in a vibrant atmosphere of stylish construction. Within a few
blocks of the heralded South Carolina Medical University complex and
the prestigious College of Charleston, Radcliffeboro is a favored
address among college professors, doctors and other professionals.
Notable Homes and Buildings:
Radcliffeborough resonates with the peal of bells atop the Cathedral
of St. Luke and St. Paul, an imposing 1815 structure once called
“The Planters’ Church”. Numerous plantation owners built summer
houses facing the breezes along old Coming’s Creek in the colonial
and post-Revolutionary period, and became parishioners of this
Georgian- style church with fortress-like bell tower. The original
bells were donated to the Confederacy to be melted for cannons, and
were replaced in the 1990’s by new bells that are rung by hand in
the beautiful “change-ringing” style.
Neighborhood Restaurants and Shopping:
The charm of Radcliffeborough is flavored with one of Charleston’s
most heralded neighborhood restaurants, Pane E Vino at 17 Warren
Street. This delightful, intimate eatery is graced with an old-world
European flavor, with Bolognese sauces, Casoncelli and Gnocchi, and
a robust selection of exquisite wines.
