Johns Island, South Carolina offers captivating blend of natural beauty, old world charm, and relaxed lifestyle. Only ten minutes from historic Charleston, the grand sea island abounds with massive, moss-laden oaks swaying in gentle breezes from surrounding waterways, inlets and estuaries. Historically an abundant farmland with winding roads through pristine fields and forests, the island was largely undeveloped until the late 20th century, and today offers an excellent variety of upscale properties.
Historic landmarks include the 18th century Fenwick Hall, one of the grandest examples of early Georgian architecture and once occupied by British troops during the American Revolution. Among the natural marvels is the massive Angel Oak, estimated to be more than 400 years old and whose giant limbs create a canopy that extends more than 2,000 square yards. Recreational opportunities are abundant with such highlights as Trophy Lakes, a man-made waterski facility with summer camps and daily lessons in a variety of waterspouts, as well as top-flight public and private golf courses, such as the 18-hole 7130-yard Briar’s Creek course designed by Rees Jones.
Second in size only to Long Island on the Atlantic Coast, Johns Island is ideally-situated to enjoy the benefits of coastal living within a more protected environmental setting, as well as offering access to one of the world’s most exciting cities, while retaining a countryside atmosphere. John Island is a sea island, which lies inland of barrier islands afford more protection but without losing the benefit of ocean breezes and access to surf and sand. The stunning golf resorts at Kaiwah and Seabrook islands are adjacent, only a stone’s throw across windswept estuary, and it’s easy to have dinner at one of Charleston’s five-star restaurants, then enjoy dessert at home on a moonlit porch overlooking expansive marshes swaying in the breeze.
