Boasts 360-degree view of the ''The Holy City'' and views of Ashley River, Cooper River, the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, and the Charleston Harbor.
This was Charleston’s original “skyscraper”, built in 1910 as an office building standing eight stories and the first in the city to feature passenger elevators. Originally home to the People’s Bank of South Carolina, then located on the ground floor, the structure towered over the historic South of Broad district as a distinct departure from the past. Among the first to ride to the top was visiting President William Howard Taft, who remarked that the view was grander than anything in the city - and still is.
With current municipal height zones prohibiting anything in this part of the city to be built higher than 55 feet, the 121-foot People’s Building will never have its view obscured, and from most floors there are captivating views of the historic “Holy City” skyline, Charleston Harbor, the Ashley and Cooper rivers, and Fort Sumter.
The unusual facade is distinctive with its bright Stoney Landing Brick laced with terra cotta trim atop the two story girding of Winnsboro Granite, and has been home to a long line of Charleston businesses in its initial century. The grand old structure offers a prestigious address in the heart of the old city on its most notable historic avenue - Broad Street - and some of the most famous photos of the city have been taken from its preferred perch, including a colossal view of the U.S. Navy’s “Great Gray Fleet” sailing into Charleston harbor in 1912.
The People’s Building features one of the Atlantic coast’s most exclusive properties for sale in its fabulous penthouse suite, consisting of two floors, 7600 square feet and a rooftop garden, all featured in Architectural Digest in 2009.
