Beginning at Capers
Island State Heritage Preserve and heading North is the longest
stretch of undeveloped coast line on the Eastern Seaboard of the
United States. The Charleston area has some of the few remaining
undeveloped barrier islands in the United States. The surrounding
salt marshes of Charleston's barrier islands offer excellent
opportunities for kayaking, crabbing, shrimping and fishing. Some of the more popular areas with marsh front property are James Island, Mount Pleasant, Johns Island, Wadmalaw Island, and West Ashley. James Island is only about 10-20 minutes from downtown Charleston. You can access downtown via the James Island connector. Mount Pleasant is on the other side of downtown Chaleston and is 10-25 minutes to downtown depending on where you live. There are lots of older established neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant and well as new contruction options. West Ashley is 5-35 minutes from downtown and offers a wide variety of old and new home communities. Johns Island and Wadmalaw are more rural. Typically you can find property with larger lot sizes within planned communities as well as vacant land where you can build to suit.
Fishing is another favorite pastime in the creeks, marshes and rivers of Charleston. Fishing in the shallow saltwater marshes is favorite for many in the lowcountry. It's exciting the second you see the fish tail come up out of the water. You know you are in the right place at the right time. This is why people love the lowcountry!
