This stylish, historic three-story residence was built in the early 1850’s, during Charleston’s antebellum golden age. Constructed in the popular “single house” style of the day, this home features the classic gable-roofed façade and double side piazzas that offers a more private entrance and better natural ventilation.
The brick siding created in plantation kilns is clad with pastel-colored layers of stucco, and is beveled and painted white on street-front corners with the distinctive style known as the “quoin”. Inside, elegant living rooms on first and second floors display wonderful heart-pine flooring cut from the ancient coastal forests of South Carolina, while joists, wooden framing and piazza columns include historic beams of cypress.
To the rear of the historic house, down the shaded path once used for horse and buggy, is a cozy, two-story carriage house. This attached smaller dwelling has its own private entrance from the rear house garden, where lush camellias and ferns offer a serene setting. Windows on the north façade overlook the spacious, manicured garden of the William Shingler house, built with a lavish Italianate design in 1853.
The Carriage House has been operated as a B&B through the Historic B & B
in the past.
Among the splendid historic features built into the house by skilled 19th
century craftsmen are incomparable parlor cornice mouldings and plaster ceiling
medallions, as well as Ionic volutes atop rare jamb shaft columns on the dining
room mantel. The exterior is distinguished by stucco belts courses, splayed
lintels above street windows and capped chimneys along a marvelous gabled slate
roof.
Limehouse Street is a fairly short thoroughfare that extends south from Tradd Street to South Battery and the scenic Ashley River. Its character retains the look of old world splendor, dominated by houses built before the Civil War. These grand dwellings are rare in the quiet western streets in the famous South of Broad district, having escaped the terrible 1861 fire that swept past just a block away. The echo of days long gone still resonates with the gentle sound of tour carriage heels passing by, adding to its singular historic charm.
Like many houses in Charleston that
were built before the Civil War, this home is in need of some
age-related repairs. The classic surfaces of brick, plaster, and
wood have experienced the stresses of time, but have retained
the timeless essence of this 19th century jewel. This is a dream
address for anyone looking for an historic home whose original
character and integrity has not been altered by a major
renovation.
